If you're looking for a rock solid foundation into the art of storyboarding, this course will give you the right foundation, knowledge and awareness to start producing your boards. It was by far one of the best courses on the subject that I have experienced.

OVERVIEW

CINEMATIC STORYBOARDING elevates visual storytelling from spectacle to emotional immersion. This course will do a deep dive into the tools of filmmaking that compel the audience to be transported into the world of your story.

This course will train you to dive into the mind of your audience and compose image sequences that create the emotional impact the story needs.
You’ll become fluent in FILM GRAMMAR, and equipped to adapt to any style of production.
We’ll integrate 3D into your process with programs like Storyboard Pro, Blender, and Photoshop.

COURSE DETAILS

Each Friday an interactive presentation from Adam is released on a private portal. The presentation is a series of short videos and exercises that can be watched at your leisure. (total run time approx 1 hour per class)
Each Saturday -- you meet online with Adam and the other students for live demos, select assignment reviews, feedback, and Q&A (Approx 1 hour).
Assignments and exercises are designed to train the artist to apply the principles and build portfolio samples.
Classes and Demos will be recorded and able to be viewed on a private portal. These recordings will be available to watch for 6 months.

CINEMATIC COMPOSITION

Week 1 - We delve into techniques designed to lead the eye where you want it to go. We explore the mind of the audience by tapping into the hunter-gatherer instincts. We also introduce the 6 CONTRASTS that are the pillars of visual storytelling.

Is this course for you?

Cinematic Storyboarding was originally developed to train storyboard artists to be fully equipped to work in any style of production -- to understand our role in the production pipeline (animation and live action), and communicate effectively with directors and cinematographers. HOWEVER, as I have worked with filmmakers of all disciplines, every one of them have said how vital it is to understand film grammar and cinematic storytelling. Screenwriters, for example, need to be able to paint a picture of the movie they see in their minds -- with screen direction and dialogue. Cinematographers need to be well-versed in film grammar and techniques in pacing and storytelling. Whether you're a director, producer, actor, editor, set designer, concept artist, and yes, storyboard artist, these tools will help you cut through the fog of composing a scene. It's not a formula. It's the grammar that gives you the language of cinematic storytelling. You do not need to be able to draw well to take this course. (In fact stick figures are ideal for learning the principles!) This course is for you if you want to learn the craft of visual storytelling and immerse your audience in a cinematic experience.

Storyboarding is more about representing the necessary information in the shot than it is looking pretty. It's like playing a game of Pictionary - usually the fastest way to get the idea across wins!

YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Adam Argot is a professional storyboard and concept artist with more than 15 years experience in animation, live action, advertising, and games. With a clientele including Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Marvel, Paramount, Santa Monica Studios, Blizzard Entertainment, Skydance Media, Hasbro, Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, and others. Adam has also taught as an instructor at CalArts in story and concept art, and guest lectures at USC.
